The Green River from Flaming Gorge Dam to Gates of Lodore (46 miles total) has fabulous red rock canyon walls for the first 14 miles then opens up to a cottonwood lined river corridor. Crystal clear water and an abundance of fish make this a worthwhile trip and permits are not required.
High use is to be expected for the first seven miles from Flaming Gorge Dam to Little Hole and camping is not permitted. Assigned camps with fire pits and picnic tables are available from Little Hole to Indian Crossing. Open camping is available from Indian Crossing to Gates of Lodore.
In the late nineteenth century, cattle rustlers and criminals such as Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch often "holed up" here. They frequented the Browns Park area and often jumped from Utah to Colorado and Wyoming to escape the law.
